What Is a Brow Lift?

Brow lift procedures aim to reposition the eyebrows and reduce the wrinkles on the forehead that create an angry- or tired-looking appearance. With a brow lift, Dr. Sanniec can eliminate excess forehead skin with well-concealed incisions placed in either the hairline or above the eyebrows to create a smoother, younger-looking forehead.

An East Valley brow lift can raise the eyebrows to a more youthful position to rejuvenate the overall appearance and improve the appearance of:

  • Brows that have lost their arch
  • Drooping or uneven eyebrows
  • Vertical frown lines, glabellar lines, between the eyebrows
  • Horizontal creases and furrows between the eyebrows
  • Wrinkles on the bridge of the nose
  • Sagging brows that cause hooded upper eyelids

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

As the most delicate facial skin, the eyelids are typically the first to show the signs of aging. Medically known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery is a procedure to address the signs of aging in the eyelids. It is a subtle way to look younger and more rejuvenated and can often be performed under local anesthesia.

During upper eyelid surgery, incisions are placed inconspicuously in the natural creases, the tissues are tightened, and extra skin and excess fat are removed. In lower eyelid surgery, incisions are made either in the lash line to remove excess skin and fat or on the inside of the lower eyelid to remove fat.

To improve the appearance of the eyes, West Valley blepharoplasty can create a refreshed, more alert facial appearance and:

  • Address loose, sagging skin that interrupts natural contours or hinders vision
  • Decrease fatty deposits that cause undereye bags
  • Reduce eye puffiness
  • Correct drooping lower eyelids that reveal the whites below the iris
  • Reduce excess skin and minimize fine wrinkles of the lower eyelids
  • Lessen the weight of sagging lids that can cause eye fatigue
  • Create a brighter, more alert appearance

Your Brow Lift | Eyelid Surgery Consultation in Phoenix, AZ

Don’t be alarmed if Dr. Sanniec tries to talk you out of plastic surgery during your brow lift or eyelid surgery consultation. Rather than convincing patients to get plastic surgery, Dr. Sanniec wants patients who have decided on their own that they want the procedure and who he thinks will benefit from it. To ensure patient satisfaction, Dr. Sanniec focuses on treatments that deliver effective results that will age well with his patients rather than trendy procedures.

Dr. Sanniec will begin your consultation by getting to know you, discussing your goals and medical history, and considering whether he is the right surgeon for you. He will then determine the appropriate procedures by evaluating your facial features, including bone structure, muscles and fat, wrinkles and folds, and skin texture and laxity. During your consultation, he will discuss his philosophy of maximizing longevity and natural-looking, anatomically achievable results. Dr. Sanniec will always recommend the least invasive, lowest-risk method to achieve optimal results, including non-surgical alternatives. He aims to deliver beautiful, long-lasting enhancements that create balance with each patient’s natural physique and features.

Preparing for a Phoenix, AZ Brow Lift | Eyelid Lift Surgery

You should be in good overall health before your West Valley brow lift or blepharoplasty procedure. Dr. Sanniec and his team will provide thorough instructions on preparing for surgery and recovery; however, here is some general information.

  • Complete at least 30 minutes of walking, or other activity, per day for at least a couple of weeks before surgery. Patients who complete more training and physical activity before surgery recover more quickly.
  • For several weeks before surgery, eat a nutritious, high-protein diet and minimize simple carbs.
  • Stay well-hydrated before and after surgery.
  • Dr. Sanniec may recommend visiting your primary physician for an examination and appropriate testing, such as routine blood work, to ensure you’re medically fit for surgery.
  • Smoking is detrimental to your overall health and can greatly impact your recovery and results. As such, Dr. Sanniec requires patients to stop smoking at least 4 weeks before and after surgery.
  • Take adequate time off work to ensure you can focus on recovery.
  • Prepare a clean, comfortable place in your home to recover. You may find it helpful to freeze meals or set up a food delivery service.
  • Fill prescriptions and procure all necessary supplies.
  • Arrange for assistance, including requesting a responsible adult drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours after your procedure. Coordinate help with household management or childcare for a few weeks following surgery.
  • Follow your pre-op medication protocol as determined during your consultation.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol for at least 48 hours before surgery.
  • Engage in exercise the day before surgery to help with nervous energy.
  • Get plenty of rest the night before your procedure.
  • Wash and condition your hair before surgery. Place long hair in a ponytail or braid to minimize tangles and knots.

What to Expect During Your Brow Lift | Eyelid Surgery

Avoid eating or drinking after midnight the night before your West Valley eyelid surgery or brow lift. Take necessary medications with small sips of water. Come to the surgery center freshly showered and free of makeup, lotions, or deodorants. Wear comfortable, loose clothing that will be easy to put on after your procedure.

As Dr. Sanniec performs surgery at numerous hospitals and surgery centers in the Phoenix metropolitan area, he will discuss the most convenient time and place for your surgery during your consultation. It’s important to note the surgery center to ensure you arrive at the correct location 60 to 90 minutes before your scheduled surgery to check in and sign necessary documents.

You will then meet with Dr. Sanniec and your board-certified anesthesia provider to review the details of your procedure and answer any final questions. Then, Dr. Sanniec will make surgical markings, and you will be taken to the operating room.

Brow Lift

Dr. Sanniec will begin your brow lift using the correct technique appropriate for your facial anatomy and goals. Dr. Sanniec will make small, well-concealed incisions in the hair-bearing region of the head. From these incisions, he will remove excess skin and fat and tighten the muscles for a smoother, younger-looking forehead.

After achieving the desired changes, Dr. Sanniec will meticulously place sutures and cover the incisions with steri-strips that should remain in place until your first post-operative appointment. Depending on the extent of your procedure, a brow lift typically takes 2 hours.

Eyelid Surgery

Depending on the individual characteristics of your procedure, Scottsdale eyelid surgery may be performed under local or general anesthesia. Dr. Sanniec will create small, inconspicuous incisions within the natural structure of your eyelids. Then, he will address excess or sagging skin, reposition or remove fat, and tighten lax muscles to create a more youthful-looking eye area.

After achieving the desired changes, Dr. Sanniec will place sutures and cover the incisions with ointment that should be maintained until your first post-operative appointment. Your eyes may be covered following your procedure for your comfort. Eyelid lifts take 2 to 3 hours, depending on the individual characteristics of the procedure.

What to Expect After Your East Valley Eyelid Surgery | Brow Lift

Brow lifts and eyelid surgeries typically are outpatient procedures, so you return home the same day. It’s important to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home from your procedure and help you with household tasks for at least a few days.

Following your blepharoplasty or brow lift, you may experience mild to moderate discomfort and social downtime for the first few weeks. It’s important to expect mild bruising, swelling, soreness, and tenderness that may last 2 weeks or more. These effects will gradually subside over the next few weeks. Dr. Sanniec may prescribe pain, anti-inflammatory, and anti-nausea medications or recommend over-the-counter medications to alleviate discomfort.

After a brow lift, expect bruising and swelling that may spread down around the eyes. To minimize swelling and bruising, elevate your head and use cold compresses on the treated area. After eyelid surgery, it’s important to note you might not be able to read, watch TV, or engage in other activities that require concentration and clear vision as the postoperative ointment may initially hinder your visual clarity. You may also experience sensitivity to light, blurred vision, or frequent tearing. Following either a brow lift or eyelid surgery, it’s important to wear dark sunglasses when you can’t avoid sunlight to protect your eyes and avoid squinting for at least 2 weeks.

To ensure a healthy recovery, Dr. Sanniec recommends light walking the night of your procedure and up to 3 to 5 times each day afterward. However, it’s important to avoid strenuous activities, such as exercise or heavy lifting, which increase your heart rate for at least 6 to 8 weeks. Patients may resume light exercises like walking or riding a stationary bike within 2 weeks.

Recovery from brow lift or eyelid surgery greatly depends upon the extent of your procedures and your body’s healing abilities. Patients typically need 1 to 2 weeks for initial recovery, and then they feel well enough to resume working. Full recovery may take 3 to 6 months.

Brow Lift FAQs in Scottsdale, AZ

To achieve full facial rejuvenation and smoother facial contours, Dr. Sanniec may recommend complementary procedures to help you achieve dramatically youthful results. Combining procedures can help patients achieve their aesthetic goals more quickly without requiring multiple surgeries and recoveries, making it a more cost-effective option.

Complementary procedures for a West Valley eyelid surgery or brow lift may include:

After a brow lift, results are typically visible immediately. Patients should expect mild swelling and bruising for approximately 2 weeks. Sutures are typically removed within 5 to 10 days following surgery. As swelling and bruising dissipate, around the 6-week mark, patients experience a smoother, more youthful appearance. Full results are typically visible in 3 to 6 months.

Following eyelid surgery, patients experience mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising that lasts 10 to 14 days. These side effects may obscure your final outcome before they gradually resolve to reveal more alert, younger-looking eyes. Residual swelling may last up to a year.

After a brow lift or eyelid surgery, sun protection is crucial. Avoid squinting by wearing dark sunglasses or a wide-brimmed hat when sun exposure is unavoidable. Following Dr. Sanniec’s post-operative instructions, such as maintaining a balanced diet and consistent exercise routine and protecting your eyes and skin from sun exposure, will help you maintain long-lasting results from your East Valley brow lift or eyelid lift procedures for several years.

This can depend on the type of surgery you have and if you are treating the upper and lower lids at the same time and if you are doing surgery in office under local (upper eyelid surgery only) or in an OR.  In general the price for an upper blepharoplasty is typically $3,000-$5,000 and the cost of a lower blepharoplasty is $3,500-$6,000 and combined can range from $6,000-$9,000.

There is not a single number of years as each person ages differently. It’s about overall appearance of the periorbital region. My goal is for patients to be told they look “more refreshed” or “must have gotten good sleep last night”, where someone doesn’t know exactly what was done but that the patient just looks refreshed.

This will depend on your goals of surgery and your areas of primary concern. Dr. Sanniec will take a thorough examination and discuss options and benefits of treating one or both.  In general, you want to treat the upper and lower eyelids at the same time to ensure facial harmony, as having youthful upper eyelids but more aging lower eyelids often doesn’t get patients their goal aesthetic.

This depends on the patient’s concerns and their anatomy. The age can range from 45-65, but some patients get one as early as their mid 40s or well into their 70s.

Brow lift results can last years but it’s important to understand what we mean by last.  The brow lift will “reset” the aging process and give a more youthful appearance of the brow but the effects of gravity and aging over the next few years may lead to some slight descent of the brow.

There are different definitions for a brow lift but most people consider a mini brow lift as something that is focusing on the lateral eyebrow. Also known as a temporal brow lift, this is a smaller incision and only targets the lateral brow and raises this up to restore a more youthful appearance of the eyebrow. A full brow lift requires a larger incision and will focus on raising the entire eyebrow. The need for this is based on your goals and aging process and is why it is critical to have a thorough evaluation performed prior to deciding on the surgery.

The brow lift does not fix excess eyelid skin. It focuses on the brow pushing down and dropping onto the upper eyelid and bunching this up. Often by lifting the brow, this can open up the eyelid and improve the appearance of the eyelids, but if there is hooding (eyelid skin folding on itself or touching the lashes) this will not be fixed with a brow lift surgery alone.

They treat different aspects of the aging process. A brow lift can resuspend the eyebrow to a more youthful position and open up the eyelids. An eyelid lift focuses on removing the loose eyelid skin and fat herniation of the upper and lower eyelids that are caused by the aging process to give a more refreshed and youthful appearance. It is critical that a thorough examination is performed to ensure appropriate diagnosis and treatment planning. Often patients will get both a brow lift and upper and lower blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) to rejuvenate the periorbital area.

A brow lift offers a more permanent solution than Botox to lift the brow, but it is a surgery and requires patients to heal from the surgery.  Botox is quick and done in the office and can help lift the brow by limiting the muscles affecting the brow.  Botox is not as good at correcting significant brow aging and a brow lift is needed to really improve this area.

Yes you can still have Botox after a Brow lift.  Whether you need it is dependent on the patient.  The brow lift resets the aging process on the eyebrows but it doesn’t prevent aging and over time this brow can start to descend again.  Many patients want Botox to help prolong the results of their lift over the next decade.
